BASIC NEEDS FOR AFFILIATE MARKETING START UP

Written by Joseph Johnson

Starting an affiliate marketing business is one of the best ways to build an online income. With just a laptop or even a smartphone, you can create a platform where people read your content, trust your advice, and buy products through your affiliate links. I, Joseph Johnson, began my journey with little knowledge but a lot of determination, and today I want to share the basic needs for anyone who wants to start affiliate marketing using WordPress or Blogspot.

In this article, I’ll break down the foundation of affiliate marketing, why WordPress and Blogspot are important tools, and the step-by-step essentials to set up your affiliate marketing business for success.

WHY WORDPRESS AND BLOGSPOT ARE GREAT FOR BEGINNERS

When starting affiliate marketing, you need a platform to share your content. The two most popular and beginner-friendly options are WordPress and Blogspot (Blogger).

WORDPRESS : A powerful content management system that gives you control, flexibility, and thousands of themes and plugins. It requires hosting and a domain, but it looks very professional and scalable for growth.

Blogspot (Blogger): A free platform by Google that lets you publish content easily. It’s budget-friendly for beginners, and because it’s owned by Google, it integrates well with Adsense and other Google tools.

When I started, I tested both WordPress and Blogspot. Blogspot gave me the confidence to begin without spending money, but later, I switched to WordPress for more control and growth potential.

BASIC NEEDS FOR AFFILIATE MARKETING STARTUP

Every successful affiliate marketer needs a foundation. Let’s look at the essential elements you must have before launching your business.

1. A CLEAR NICHE

You cannot promote everything and expect to succeed. Choose a niche—a focused area where you build authority and trust. Examples include:

Health and Fitness

Technology and Gadgets

Relationships and Dating

Personal Finance

Digital Marketing

When I picked affiliate marketing as my niche, I made mistakes by writing about too many random topics. Once I focused, I noticed more clicks and sales.

2. A BLOG OR WEBSITE (WORDPRESS OR BLOGSPOT)

This is your online home. Whether you start with Blogspot for free or invest in WordPress, you need a platform where your content lives.

Blogspot Advantage: Free, easy, and Adsense-friendly.

WordPress Advantage: Professional, customizable, and better for long-term growth.

If you are on a tight budget, start with Blogspot. Later, you can move to WordPress when you’re ready to scale.

3. A DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING (FOR WORDPRESS USERS)

A domain name is your online address (like www.yoursite.com). Hosting is where your site files live. For WordPress, you need both. Choose a domain that is short, memorable, and relevant to your niche.

Example: If you are in the fitness niche, something like fitlifestylehub.com works better than a long or complicated name.

4. QUALITY CONTENT

Content is the heart of affiliate marketing. Without valuable articles, product reviews, or tutorials, people won’t trust you enough to buy through your links.

Here are types of content that work:

How-to guides (e.g., How to Start a Fitness Routine)

Product reviews (e.g., iPhone vs Samsung: Which Should You Buy?)

Comparison posts

I personally saw my first affiliate sale from a simple blog post where I explained the pros and cons of a product I used.

5. AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

Once you have your blog set up, you need to join affiliate programs. Some of the best include:

Amazon Associates

ClickBank

CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction)

ShareASale

PartnerStack

Choose programs that fit your niche. For example, if your blog is about technology, Amazon and CJ Affiliate are perfect.

6. GOOGLE ADSENSE FOR EXTRA INCOME

Apart from affiliate sales, you can also make money with Google Adsense by displaying ads on your site. Blogspot is directly connected to Adsense, which makes it easy for beginners. WordPress users can also apply for Adsense once they meet the requirements.

This is why many beginners prefer Blogspot—because Adsense approval is faster if your blog has original content.

7. EMAIL MARKETING

Building an email list is a secret weapon in affiliate marketing. With a list, you can send promotions directly to your audience without depending on social media algorithms. Use tools like:

Mailchimp

GetResponse

ConvertKit

When I started collecting emails, my affiliate income doubled because I could follow up with my readers personally.

8. SOCIAL MEDIA PROMOTION

Having a blog alone is not enough. You must promote your content through social media platforms like Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X).

Pinterest, especially, is very powerful for bloggers. I created boards related to my niche and pinned my articles, which brought me traffic and clicks.

9. CONSISTENCY

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency beats talent. Many beginners quit because they don’t see quick results. Affiliate marketing requires patience. Keep writing, promoting, and improving, and results will follow.

10. ANALYTICS AND TRACKING

You must track your progress. Use tools like Google Analytics to understand where your traffic is coming from, which posts perform best, and what affiliate links are converting. Data helps you improve.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

When I first started, I didn’t have much money. I used Blogspot to create my first blog and joined Amazon Associates. At first, I was getting only a few clicks, and no sales came in.

But instead of giving up, I kept writing better content, joining new affiliate programs, and sharing my posts on Pinterest. Within three months, I made my first $50, and later, I crossed my first $300 in affiliate commissions. That moment proved to me that this business works if you stick to it.

Today, I still use WordPress for my main blogs, but I recommend beginners try Blogspot if they don’t want to spend much at the start.

FINAL WORDS

Starting affiliate marketing is exciting but requires the right foundation. The basic needs for an affiliate marketing startup are:

A clear niche

A blog (WordPress or Blogspot)

A domain name (for WordPress)

Quality content

Affiliate programs

Adsense for extra income

Email marketing

Social media promotion

Consistency

Analytics tools

With these, you can start small and grow big. Don’t wait for the “perfect time.” Start with what you have, even if it’s just Blogspot and a smartphone. As I, Joseph Johnson, discovered on my journey, success in affiliate marketing comes step by step.
